Permeability enhancement and void formation in peridotite by dissolution of olivine using chelating agents.
Chelating agents were used to enhancing the permeability of igneous rocks, such as granite, andesite, and basalt. In this study, I will show the results of flooding experiments using chelating agents on a fractured-core peridotite sample at 200 °C under confining stress (15 MPa) using aqueous solutions of an environmentally friendly N, N-bis(carboxymethyl)-L-glutamic acid (GLDA) at pH 4 for two hours. The results indicate an accelerated dissolution of olivine that created wormholes as large as 300 µm depth along the fracture, increasing the permeability rapidly by 35-fold. The evidence used for this study were X-ray CT, ICP-OES, EPMA, and SEM observations.
